DSR wins two NHRA world championships at Pomona; Matco’s/Aaron’s Brown in Top Fuel, Valvoline’s Beckman in Funny Car

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2012) - For the second time since 2005, Don Schumacher Racing won two prestigious NHRA world championships.

Jack Beckman’s Valvoline NextGen Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car edged DSR teammate Ron Capps and his NAPA AUTO PARTS team by two points to earn Beckman his first NHRA professional championship while Capps finished runner-up for the fourth time.

In Top Fuel, there was even more drama in the Auto Club NHRA Nationals.

Points leader Antron Brown lost in the first round when a fuel line broke and flames nipped at his legs and hands. After suffering minor burns, he had to stand by with wrapped hands as DSR teammate Tony Schumacher nearly made a miraculous march to his eighth world title in the U.S. Army dragster.

Schumacher advanced the championship round and had to win to overcome Brown. But Schumacher’s run of 3.753 seconds at 325.53 mph was edged by Brandon Bernstein’s slower 3.762 (320.81) because Bernstein was an eye-blink quicker leaving the starting line.

Brown became the first African-American to win a major American auto racing season championship by finishing seven points ahead of Schumacher.

In Funny Car, Capps had to advance one round further than Beckman in eliminations at Auto Club Raceway. After each won their first two rounds, Capps lost in the semifinals moments before Beckman lost in the same round.

In 2005, Schumacher and retired Funny Car driver Gary Scelzi won both professional titles for DSR. Capps also finished second to Scelzi that year for the championship.
